Nikon D60’s Position in the D Series
Despite its low model number, the D60 is surprisingly a new model introduced mid-2008 after the DSLR heavyweights – the D3 and D300 hit the shelves. This means that you can expect some modern features introduced by these cameras which will be discussed below. It is the successor of the Nikon D40x and higher resolution version of the entry-level counterpart – the Nikon D40.
Design
Visually, the Nikon D60 looks nearly identical to the D40 and D40x that it replaces. It has the same red triangle design in the front with the same shutter button in place. Of course the only noticeable feature is the metallic D60 logo on the right side. Because it is an entry-level camera, figuring out all the functions shouldn’t be very difficult whether you used any previous Nikon model or not.
You can find the Video Out and USB 2.0 ports on the left side of the camera by lifting the cover there. It also houses a reset button as well. There are also two buttons there that serve as the flash and self-timer functions respectfully. If you use the AF-I or AF-S lenses, you can also control the autofocus motors from the left side. On the right side, you will find nothing, but the memory card compartment door where you can insert an SD card.
The top view also looks similar to the other entry-level designs with the mode dial as the centerpiece which sets the exposure and scene settings. Like all the other DSLR cameras, the shutter button lies with the power switch for convenience.
The back of the camera is where you can find all the other buttons that control the user interface being displayed on the 2.5 inch display. It is complete with a directional pad and other iconic buttons that should give you no trouble with reviewing and deleting images. Finally on the bottom of the camera, the EN-EL9 battery can be inserted there. Overall, it is a light and basic camera that closely resembles the older entry-level models.
Features
Just like the D40x, the Nikon D60 is able to take 10.2 megapixel or 3872 x 2592 photos. The megapixel count may be comparable to some of the other point-and-shoot cameras, but what makes this a bit more professional is the fact that it includes the AF-S DX NIKKOR lens as well. These lens help sharpen photos and preserve colors while maintaining its quick processing speed. It also provides an accurate autofocus function as well as help eliminate blur using the special Vibration Reduction technology built-in to the lens. The sensor is also protected with a special Active Dust Reduction system to keep the dust out.
Compared to the other entry-level cameras, the Nikon D60 starts up fast and can capture shots the moment the shutter is pressed to capture timely moments. In addition, photographers may shoot continuously to as many as 100 JPEG images straight at 3 frames per second.
What also separates this entry-level DSLR camera from other point-and-shoot cameras is the EXPEED image processor that is used to optimize pictures after each shot is made. There are also 8 automatic shooting modes that are ideal for certain scenes and lighting conditions. The Nikon 3D Color Matrix Metering II technology combined with the other available image optimization options also contribute to producing better pictures.
Nikon D60 Extras
The Nikon D60 allows you to create a stop motion segment from several images for some creative outputs. With the use of the ML-L3 wireless remote control, you can trigger the shutter from a distance.
Bottom Line
The Nikon D60 is considered to be the smallest digital SLR camera in the family weighing just 16 ounces. At the same time, it delivers great performance and houses powerful technologies making this a worthy entry-level DSLR camera and powerful point-and-shoot upgrade.
